Chinese Doctor of Education learns the truth about Falun Gong - going from fear to belief
Joy is a Chinese Australian Doctor of Education who worked as an educational researcher at an Australian university for many years. She shared her story of how her attitude towards Falun Dafa changed from fear to firm belief.
In 2013, a friend suggested that Falun Dafa could help Joy improve her poor health, but Joy had been exposed to the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) misinformation campaign against the practice and was reluctant to try it. Eventually, out of desperation, she gave it a try and realised that her personal experience with Falun Dafa was completely different to the CCP’s condemnation of the ancient self-cultivation practice.
Below is Joy’s story, translated from Chinese.
Past Poor Health
I used to have so many health problems from a young age that caused me serious trouble. I had awful back pain for four years starting in 2009. It was too painful to sit down so I had to stand while eating.
I tried all kinds of treatments, both Western and traditional Chinese medicine, including massage, bone-setting, acupuncture, electrocautery, yoga, Pilates, Tai Chi, and others. My pain got a little better and I could finally sit down to eat, but I still had to get up every half hour otherwise my back would get as stiff as a board.
Then my neck started giving me trouble and I would feel dizzy after half an hour sitting at my computer. My stomach pain became so bad that I had to take more and more medicine. Eventually I couldn't digest anything and my stomach hurt and felt bloated 24 hours a day.
Deceived by the CCP's Lies about Falun Dafa
In 2013, one of my friends told me about Falun Dafa and suggested it might help me. But I’d heard so much negative CCP propaganda against the practice that I ignored my friend's suggestion and continued with my traditional Chinese medical treatments. But my stomach problems didn't improve in spite of the Chinese medicine. I couldn't even live a normal life, much less work a job. I thought it was because overseas doctors of Chinese medicine aren't as good as those in China, but I couldn't afford the time to go back to China for treatment.
Finally, after exhausting all other health avenues, I remembered my friend's suggestion about Falun Dafa. By then I was desperate and thought I’d give it a try just for three months and then go back to China to see a good Chinese medicine doctor.
Surprised by Falun Dafa's Effect on Health
I remember the first time I did the exercises I felt warmth in my stomach, where it used to be painful and cold. I began to do the exercises for 20 minutes a day, hoping it would ease my stomach pains. Amazingly, when I was doing the exercises, all the ill parts of my body, like my back, neck, and stomach, felt like they were being adjusted by something.
Even though I was seeing physical improvements, my mind had been so heavily influenced by the CCP's lies about Falun Dafa that I felt afraid to read Zhuan Falun, (the main book of teachings by Master Li Hongzhi, the founder of Falun Dafa). It took a while before I summoned up my courage to read the teachings. When I did, I was so surprised to find that the teachings had nothing bad in them. They were completely different to what the CCP had told us. The content is very righteous. The main theme of the book is how to be a good person. I agreed with the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance, which is repeatedly mentioned throughout the book. I thought, ‘Isn’t it great to be a good person! Who doesn't want to be a good person? I will follow Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance too!'
I grew up in an atheist environment, but my personal experience showed me that what Falun Dafa teaches about self-cultivation is all true. Falun Dafa is absolutely genuine and upright!
About three months later, I was finally able to go back to China, but by then, my stomach, neck, and back had stopped hurting. After just three months, I’d seen the benefits of practicing. Not only did my health improve, but my character also changed for the better. I started to follow Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance in my daily life and work, and became more thoughtful of others. I used to have a short temper and loved to argue. I wouldn't stop talking until I gained the upper hand and I never admitted to doing anything wrong. After I started cultivating myself (following the principles of Falun Dafa), I learned to look inside for my own faults. My parents told me that I'd become more sensible and obedient. They are very supportive of my cultivation.
Cultivation also helped me concentrate better and become more efficient. My research work is very stressful, and I used to get anxious easily. As I started to cultivate myself, I found I could handle stress more easily and no longer feel anxious.
Grateful to Falun Dafa for the amazing benefits to my life
I originally thought I would only practice for three months, but I’ve now been practicing for over 11 years. I've benefited so much from it and experienced so many amazing things. I’ve found Falun Dafa to be so profound and so uplifting!
